Furnace. Gravity Distortion Time Displacement Unit EP.

My old band played with these fine fellows in a house in rural New England last summer that shook to its very foundation upon the start of their set, rattling windows on the neighbors' homes. Hailing from various spots around Massachusetts and New Hampshire, Furnace play a particularly brutal version of Bucket Full of Teeth's initial model of post-hardcore set to a grind tempo, interjecting a healthy dose of hardcore and thrashy punk into the mix as well. The band slams down ferociously as quickly as possible, yet I've been recently of the opinion that when they open up their sound, especially on the relentless and epic "I Rest Easy, Your Ship Has Sailed" (also found on a split 7" with L'antietam on the Electric Human Project), the band really has something more than simply captivating: they've found something new.

Thou. Tyrant LP.

Describing the new wave of doom and sludge and stoner metal is a little difficult, and is really Dominic's forte, but I really wanted to get this record up and out there, so I'm just gonna go ahead and do it. Thou are not only a band from New Orleans, Louisiana, they're also one of the loudest, heaviest things on the planet when they play live, which is recommended in a tiny, dimly lit room. Featuring members of Dear Diary I Seem to Be Dead and We Need to Talk, the group churns out a form of doom/sludge metal that evokes bands like Asunder and Burning Witch, but also with (surprisingly) strangely beautiful interludes in the vein of a band like Neurosis. The band is currently playing, based out of New Orleans, but has visited the west coast and the midwest already this year, and will be touring heavily throughout the United States in the next year.

Kepler. Fuck Fight Fail LP + This Heart is Painted On EP.

One of our favorite bands, Kepler were a wonderful group from Ontario, Canada. They put out a handful of 7"s, a few comp tracks, an EP, and three LPs, all of which are highly recommended. Talk of bands like Low and Bedhead have surrounded this band since the very beginning, but I've always thought they sounded like a band using slowcore as more of an aesthetic, less of a structure thing songwriting-wise, focusing more on a slower, more drawn out post-rock style in their compositions. Early Godspeed You Black Emperor! merged with the For Carnation wouldn't be a bad comparison. Surprisingly enough, this band has connections with two of the major players in the more mainstream indie rock scene, as their bassist was a contributing writer at Pitchfork before the band started in earnest, and their drummer currently plays with the Arcade Fire.

Introduction / How-To / Etc

Hi. We're Charlie and Dominic. We like bands. We play in bands. We're friends with bands. We talk about bands. This just seems like an easier way to talk about music with our friends (and anyone else who cares to chime in, really). Suggestions and contributions are always welcome.

We'll be posting records that we like and writing about them, and encourage you, the reader, to respond as well if you please.

You'll need WinRAR to open the files you download from this blog, which can be found pretty easily with a Google search. The majority of files will be hosted on Mediafire. These are for evaluation purposes only, and though we can't control what you do with them, we strongly encourage you to delete the mp3s and consider buying the recordings after 24 hours. Labels and bands work pretty hard, and supporting them is always a great idea.
